This book contains the fairy dust you might need to fly off to Neverland. A first edition of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, complete with Arthur Rackham's much-loved illustrations. Following the huge success of the Peter Pan play, with its London premiere on 27 December 1904, Barrie decided on its publication, choosing Rackham as illustrator. The text was taken, with some revisions, from his book The Little White Bird (1902) and published specifically as a story for children. The original brown gold engraved binding, fold-out map and illustrated frontispiece are joined by forty-nine colour prints and accompanying black and white illustrations featuring the detailed lines of Arthur Rackham. The character of the boy who is forever a child and his adventures in Neverland have become icons in the collective imagination. James Barrie's inspiration derived from his relationship with the children of Sylvia and Arthur Llewelyn Davies, with whom he played in Kensington Gardens, the setting for his adventure. Indeed, this place now immortalises the story and its creator through the statue of Peter Pan sculpted by Sir James Frampton so soon after publication as 1912. Tic-toc-tic-toc... An essential copy!
