ENTRANCE TO LIVRARIA LELLO

Livraria Lello hosts International Congress on José Saramago

Saramago

Between October 11 and 13, Livraria Lello will host the International Congress "What shall we do with José Saramago? In the 25 Years of the Nobel Prize".

The event will take place in the Gemma room of the Most Beautiful Bookshop in the World and will feature national and international speakers, as well as other personalities such as Pilar del Río.

In October 1998, Portugal and the Portuguese-speaking world reacted with joy to the announcement that José Saramago had been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Livraria Lello, the José Saramago Chair at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro and CLEPUL - Center for Lusophone and European Literatures and Cultures at the University of Lisbon are marking this date with an International Congress dedicated to the author.

As the title of the event suggests, inspired by José Saramago's play Que Farei com Este Livro? the aim is to discuss this writer's place in Portuguese and world literature, today and in the future. In between talks, a wide range of topics will be discussed, including literary creations, human nature and the meaning of José Saramago's life.

On October 12, the conference will also feature a concert in tribute to Saramago, "Literature and Music: Substances of Immortality", with David Cruz on cello and Rui Ozorio reading excerpts from Intermitências da Morte. On the 13th, to close the Congress, the novel O Último Dia na Vida de José Saramago, by Miguel Real, and the biography As 7 Vidas de José Saramago, by Miguel Real and Filomena Oliveira, will also be presented.

The session is free to attend, subject to prior registration by emailing catedrasaramago@utad.pt, until the end of October 6th, and is limited to the capacity of the Gemma room. It will also be possible to watch some of the event's panels via livestreaming on Livraria Lello's Facebook page.
