ENTRANCE TO LIVRARIA LELLO

David Machado is Livraria Lello's author of the month for February

David Machado e João Fazenda
Livraria Lello is pleased to present the author of the month of February, children's short story writer David Machado, who will be accompanied by the illustrator of his most recent children's book Esta História, João Fazenda. The session with the author will take place on February 24th, at 9 p.m. at The Most Beautiful Bookshop in the World.

David Machado was born in Lisbon in 1978. He studied Economics at the Lisbon Institute of Economics and Management. After working for a while at the National Statistics Institute, he devoted himself to writing full-time. He writes novels, children's literature and is also a translator of Adolfo Bioy Casares O Herói das Mulheres and Mario Benedetti's Obrigada pelo Lume.

He won the Portuguese Society of Authors Award for Best Children's Book in 2010 and 2022, for his books O Tubarão na Banheira and O Meu Cavalo Indomável, respectively. He is currently one of the Portuguese nominees for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award 2024.

In children's literature he draws on his childhood memories, imagination, and sense of humor. When he writes for adults, he reflects on contemporary issues, as is the case with his book Average Happiness Index, in which the protagonist sees his dreams shattered by the crisis and unemployment. This book won him the European Union Prize for Literature in 2015 and a film adaptation which premiered in 2017.

The session is free to attend, subject to prior registration and limited to the Bookshop's capacity. It will also be possible to watch the event via livestreaming on Livraria Lello's Facebook and Instagram pages
