Livraria Lello welcomes João Tordo for the launch of his new novel O Nome que a Cidade Esqueceu

João Tordo
On November 24th, at 9 p.m., Livraria Lello will host the writer João Tordo for the presentation of his new novel O Nome que a Cidade Esqueceu. The book marks a 20-year career and 20 books that confirm João Tordo as an essential writer in contemporary Portuguese literature.

Winner of the José Saramago Prize in 2009 and the Fernando Namora Prize in 2021 for his works As Três Vidas e Felicidade, respectively, João Tordo is one of the finalists for the Oceanos Prize 2023.

Back at The Most Beautiful Bookshop in the World, the author will be chatting with journalist Sandra Sousa.

O Nome que a Cidade Esqueceu follows Natasha, who goes into exile in America, leaving behind her life and family in a former Soviet Union country. In her new country, Natasha meets George B., who offers her a job: reading aloud the New York telephone directory. While the girl learns to cope with missing her family and her country, sketching out a new life in the vibrant, raw metropolis, George, for his part, obsessively searches for a name among the millions of names that the city has forgotten; a name that could save him, or be his doom.

In his new book, João Tordo dissects loneliness, the great disease of our times, confronting his characters and readers with the past we are all trying to come to terms with.

The session is free to attend, subject to prior registration and is limited to the Bookshop's capacity. It will also be possible to watch the event via livestreaming on Livraria Lello's Facebook and Instagram pages.
