Livraria Lello welcomes Itamar Vieira Junior

Itamar
On May 26th, at 9 pm, Livraria Lello will welcome the author Itamar Vieira Junior for the presentation of his latest book Salvar o Fogo.

Itamar Vieira Junior was born in 1979, in Salvador. He began his studies at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), in Geography, becoming the first student to receive the Milton Santos Scholarship, dedicated to low-income black youth. He later completed his master's and doctorate in Ethnic Studies.

It was in 2012 that the author published his first book of short stories, Dias, and since then he has never stopped. In 2018, he won the LeYa prize, with the novel Torto Arado, highly acclaimed by the jury, chaired by the poet Manuel Alegre, who justified the unanimous award of the prize “for the solidity of the construction, the balance of the narrative and the way in which it approaches the universe in rural Brazil, placing emphasis on female figures, their freedom and the violence exerted on the body in a context dominated by patriarchal society”.

The Angolan poet Ana Paula Tavares, a member of the jury, also highlighted “the author's ability to maintain the level of the narrative” of the winning book, praising its “poetic elegance that remains from beginning to end”. In 2019, with the same book, he also received the Oceanos and Jabuti awards.

The author became a bestseller in Brazil and has sold more than 250,000 copies, being translated in more than 12 countries.

Admission to the session is free, upon prior registration, and with capacity limited to the capacity of the Bookshop. It will also be possible to watch the event via livestreaming, on Livraria Lello's Facebook page.
