JOÃO DE MELO IS THE AUTHOR OF MAY AT LIVRARIA LELLO

João de Melo
On May 18th, at 9 pm, the author João de Melo, in conversation with the writer Isabel Rio Novo, will be at Livraria Lello to tell us about his literary journey. The event will also feature readings by the actress Emília Silvestre.

João de Melo was born in the Azores in 1949, however, after finishing primary school, he moved to the mainland. After participating in the colonial war in Angola, he worked in trade union life, was an editor of Portuguese authors, a literary critic, secondary and higher education teacher, and at the invitation of the Portuguese government, was also a cultural advisor at the Portuguese embassy in Spain, playing the post until 2010.

It was in 2003, in the city of Madrid, that the author created the “Mostra Portuguesa”, the biggest Portuguese cultural event abroad. With more than seven editions held, it was the event that, to date, most promoted Portuguese culture in Spain.

João de Melo wrote numerous books of different genres, from fiction to poems, chronicles, and travel books, translated into more than 10 languages. His talent for writing led him to win seven literary prizes, including the Great Prize of the Portuguese Writers Association, the Eça de Queiroz Prize, the Cristóvão Colombo Prize, the Fernando Namora Prize, the Antena 1 Prize, the «A Balada» and, finally, the Dinis da Luz Prize. In addition to this, he was also distinguished, in 2016, by the University of Évora with the Vergílio Ferreira Prize, for his work as a whole.

The best-known book, Gente Feliz com Lágrimas, a novel released in 1988, was the work that awarded the author five literary prizes and translations in ten different countries, ending up being adapted to the theater, to a telefilm and even to a television series.

The session is free of charge, subject to prior registration, and with capacity limited to the capacity of the Most Beautiful Bookshop in the World. It will also be possible to watch the event via livestreaming, on Livraria Lello's Facebook page or Youtube channel.
