Quarantine Short Stories Award

Object
The “Quarantine Short Stories” Award, promoted by Livraria Lello, aims at encouraging the creation of short stories by Portuguese and international anonymous writers, who submit, in a fictional way, their individual experiences in this atypical period in which we find ourselves, due to the pandemic caused by the Covid-19.
It is intended to award 6 of the participants, who present unpublished works of literary fiction, in the area of the short story, of their authorship and who have not been presented in any other contest that may have a decision pending to date.
Who Can Apply
Individuals, of both, Portuguese and/or foreign nationality, who are over 18 years old may apply.
How to Apply
- 1. The competing works must have between 10 and 20 pages A4 and must be written in Times New Roman, size 12, with simple spacing.
- 2. They must be presented with an accompanying synopsis, written on a separate sheet and submitted in the same file, with 15 to 20 lines.
- 3. The works must be signed with a pseudonym of the author never before used by.
- 4. Applications must be submitted simultaneously:
- electronically, in PDF, in A4 format, through the Google Form available at https://bit.ly/2V8af9r, and
- by post, in A4 format, with the same font type and font size, to the following address:

By post, applications must also be accompanied by a closed envelope, containing the title of the work as well as the pseudonym of the author (coinciding with the pseudonym used in the copies of the work), as well as: - Candidate identification: name and full address; taxpayer number; email address and telephone number for contact;
- Signed declaration by the applicant, that the work submitted to the competition is (1) his own and that he did not contract with third parties the ownership of the corresponding author's patrimonial rights, nor burden them, under any title, as well as (2) that it is an unpublished work, and was not submitted to any other contest with a decision that may still be pending;
- Signed declaration by the applicant, that he does not know, at the date of submission of the work to the contest, of any action or interpellation of third parties claiming the ownership of either personal rights or copyright rights, or any other legal means susceptible of creating a burden on such rights;
- Signed declaration by the applicant, that with the submission of his application, he expressly accepts all the terms and conditions contained in this regulation, as well as, in the event of being awarded, the disclosure of his identity, as well as if applicable, his image and voice, by any means or support, namely including one or more media of national or international scope, and/or on digital platforms of the promoting entity and its partners, for the purpose of promoting and publicising this contest, without the right to any additional compensation;
- The applicant can submit a single statement mentioning the various points above mentioned.
- 5. In the impossibility of submitting the physical copy by post due to security reasons directly related with Covid-19, it may be sent until August 31st, 2020;
- 6. Received originals will not be returned.
- 7. The “Quarantine Short Stories” Award, by Livraria Lello, can only be awarded once to the same author.
Deadline

Jury
- 1. The Jury will consist of 2 members of Livraria Lello's Administration, one of which will preside over the Jury, by the Creative Director of Livraria Lello, by writer Valter Hugo Mãe and by RTP Journalist, João Fernando Ramos;
- 2. In case of the Jury not reaching unanimity, the President of the Board of Directors of Livraria Lello will be responsible for the final decision;
- 3. The Jury deliberates with total independence and in full freedom of discretion, by majority of the votes of its members, in the event of a tie, the President of the Jury has the casting vote;
- 4. The jury's decision, duly substantiated, is final, meaning it is not susceptible of complaint or appeal, and must be announced, at the latest, by September 30, 2020;
- 5. The Jury reserves the right not to award any prize if it considers that the candidate works do not meet the minimum evaluation requirements identified below.
Rating Criteria
The evaluation, classification and selection criteria for the candidate works will be defined by Livraria Lello, which will set up an evaluation committee, led by its Creative Director, who will read the works admitted to the competition and prepare the respective reports in light of the evaluation criteria.
The selected works, as well as the corresponding reading reports, will be presented to the Jury, in a maximum of 15, who will then decide on these, that is, selecting the 6-winning works.
The submitted works will be evaluated taking into account their originality, contemporaneity and framing in the proposed theme.
Prize
The prize total value is of 6.000€, to be divided equally by all 6 winners (1.000€ each).
Edition and Others
The terms and conditions for prize payments and its respective billing, as well as the edition of the winning works by the promoting entity will be the subject of an autonomous contract to be signed between Livraria Lello and each of the 6 authors awarded under the terms, namely provided for in the Code of Authoring Copyright and Related Rights.
Privacy
Livraria Lello, as promoting entity, is responsible for the collection and processing of personal data made available by the candidates in the context of this competition, ensuring the security and confidentiality required by legislation on the protection of personal data. It respects the right to privacy and does not collect any personal data, unless requested or with explicit consent. On the other hand, it guarantees that the collection, treatment and conservation of personal data will only be carried out within the context of this contest and for purposes related to its implementation, and also for purposes of later disclosure of Livraria Lello's activities. It guarantees that it will not transmit any personal data to third parties for commercial and/or advertising purposes.
Under the applicable law, the holder of the personal data has the following rights:
- the rights of access, rectification, deletion, limitation of processing, data portability, opposition to the particular treatment of personal data and of not being subject to any decision taken exclusively on the basis of automated processing.
