This highly valuable copy bears the signature of Queen Amélia, the last Queen Consort of Portugal and the Algarves, exiled to Britain after the fall of the monarchy following the declaration of the Portuguese Republic in 1910. This work of great beauty, with editorial binding, is dedicated to exhibiting the history of the Royal Palace of Sintra, was only published with the kind permission of the monarch, who is also the author of the Palace drawings that grace the pages of this edition. As the introduction states: "This book has a history. That history is its raison d’être, and explains its very nature. One day, years ago now, the current Queen, then Duchess of Bragança, attracted by the indescribable charm this Palace exerts on those who look at it, drew in her album of prints one of the Manueline windows in the body of the palace that was her first room. This drawing was followed by others". In addition to Amélia's drawings, there is a map and a fold-out plan, as well as a colour reproduction of the iconic Room of the Coats of Arms, a central iconographic repository of the coats of arms of the Portuguese nobility. This study by the Count of Sabugosa is a true guide to the opulence and refinement of the extent of this historic building, (re)built from the 18th century and, as we now know it, classified as a National Monument.
