Sá da Bandeira Theatre

Theatre and Literature live hand in hand, entwined by the written word; sometimes read and sometimes acted. Therefore, we had to highlight a theatre. With more than 150 years of history, the Sá da Bandeira Theatre is the oldest performance venue in the city of Porto. 
This theatre hosted the presentation of the first Portuguese directed films (by Aurélio Paz dos Reis) and welcomed the world's greatest theatre stars of the 19th century: Sarah Bernhardt, Julián Gayarre and Antonio Scalvini.
 

Num momento de grande mediatismo, Sarah Bernhardt apresentou a adaptação de um dos mais célebres romances do século XIX. A atriz deu vida a Marguerite Gautier, personagem principal da obra-prima de Alexandre Dumas (filho): A Dama das Camélias.

A ligação deste Teatro às Letras estreitou-se ainda mais em 2019. Depois de alguns anos de indefinição quanto ao futuro, foi adquirido pela Livraria Lello, sob o compromisso de preservar as características do edifício e a sua “alma” de teatro, continuando a dedicá-lo à cultura.


Em 2020, o edifício foi classificado como Monumento de Interesse Público.
