Luís Onofre Interview
Friday, August 9, 2019
Livraria Lello talked with the designer Luís Onofre during the inauguration of the Artistic Installation inspired by "The Wizard of Oz".
On August 1st, Portuguese designer Luís Onofre was at Livraria Lello for the inauguration of the Artistic Installation, developed in an association between APICCAPS and Livraria Lello, dedicated to the history of “The Wizard of Oz”. Red shoes designed by Luis Onofre for the Bookstore, which were inspired by the character Dorothy, were at the center of the Installation.
Livraria Lello had the opportunity to talk with the designer, accompanied by the president of the board of Livraria Lello, Aurora Pedro Pinto.
Luís Onofre wanted to be an interior designer, but eventually followed the family history started by his grandfather in the 1930s. He designed his first shoes in 1993 and in 1999, six years later, started his own brand. Today Luís Onofre brand is distributed practically all over the world, reaching five continents.
This interview took place at Livraria Lello, was recorded in audiovisual format and later transcribed:
Livraria Lello (LL): Good evening Luís, welcome to Livraria Lello! What was the main motivation for this partnership and why this association between the shoe industry and Livraria Lello?
Luís Onofre (LO): It came about after we launched a 10-year book of APICCAPS campaigns, which is the sexiest industry in Europe. This partnership perspective provided the opportunity to join Livraria Lello and I think it made perfect sense to do the Artistic Installation at this mythical site of the city of Porto and the World.
Aurora Pedro Pinto (APP): It was the link between two products that are absolutely sexy and object of desire: the shoes and the Bookstore. It was also a connection between a cultural plan of books and a cultural and artistic plan of the shoe industry. It was a good partnership, we are very happy!
LL: What was the main inspiration for the shoes you designed for Livraria Lello? We already know you had Dorothy's character in mind…
LO: Exactly. My inspiration was a pair of shoes I had created before, almost like a reedition of those shoes. There is a connection between the four characters of “The Wizard of Oz”, which is friendship. And the chain in the heel of these shoes represents just that - it is the bond of friendship and courage that is admirable in these four characters of the story.
LL: Why the color red?
LO: Red because it represents the classic and is the color of Dorothy's shoes, so these shoes for Livraria Lello couldn't be any other color.
LL: What can you tell us about the Foreword you wrote for the book "The Wizard of Oz", edited by Livraria Lello?
LO: The Foreword represents the meaning of friendship and is something that I have cherished a lot throughout my life. This was a book and a movie that struck me a lot in my childhood, and I will definitely read it to my son. It will be the first book and the first story I will tell him.
LL: Thank you, Luís.
LO: Thank you, it was a pleasure.
In an association between literature, fashion and luxury, Livraria Lello and APICCAPS inaugurated the Artistic Installation as a theme for the release of their edition of the book “The Wizard of Oz“.
