Livraria Lello acquired one copy of the first edition of “Gazeta da Restauração”

Livraria Lello acquired a first edition of “Gazeta da Restauração”, the first Portuguese journal dated from 1641, by the value of 3500€, from a private collector. The purchase was made under a public offer that Livraria Lello launched on January 13, during the 113º anniversary. In addition to the first edition of “Gazeta da Restauração”, Livraria Lello also announced the intention to buy the first edition of “Os Lusíadas” and “Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone”.

The historic newspaper is now on display on the first floor of Livraria Lello, inserted in the exhibition "The Missing Pieces" that intends to honor the books as a rare object of art and investment. This exhibition has been seen by more than 160000 visitors since March 07th.

“Gazeta da Restauração” was the first newspaper of the Portuguese kingdom in 1641, assuming a great importance for the history of Portugal and for the history of journalism. The public offer for the acquisition of “Gazeta da Restauração” it’s a way to honor all journalists and newspapers. At the same time, this is a way to materialize the Livraria Lello’s mission to preserve remarkable works of literature, feeding the collective memory.
